Almost too soon, my time here in Timisoara has come to an end. Visiting Eastern Europe has been a unique and, at times, challenging experience. But it is not the city’s aging infrastructure, unfamiliar brands, or the buildings and neighborhoods (still caught in the shallow of the Stalin era) that I will remember.
Rather it is the people of this country, so different, yet so alike. From the McDonald’s employees who are amused at my enthusiasm for apple pies (the recipe here is different and way better!) to the saucy, yet efficient waitress at our favorite Italian restaurant, to my wonderful colleagues in the local office who bid us fond farewell and hopes that we will want to return to their homeland before too long.
A country is not its structures, monuments, or tourist attractions, it is the souls and hearts of it’s people. I have seen the strength and warmth that rests in these human beings and I will carry it with me as I head westward…toward home.
