The rain is just easing up as I pull into Leland Harbor. Ramshackle buildings line the docks, remnants of years past when the fishing industry was king in Northern Michigan. Quaint little shops dot the landscape, selling t-shirts, moccasins, and even fresh caught fish.
A restaurant on the docks known as The Cove lives up to its name. Tucked away in a corner of the harbor next to the Dam, it is a place that Maro Batali himself raved about, singing the praises of the Chubby Mary’s, burgers, and grilled chicken sandwiches.
I choose the chicken sandwich. But, I am not prepared for the utterly succulent, delicious feast that is set before me! The breasts are hot off the grill, the cheddar melting on top and surrounded by fresh-cut fries. I sit in the comfortable, rustic room overlooking the frothing waters of the Carp River and the horizon of Lake Michigan beyond.
The lunch leaves just enough room for a slice of Cherry Crumb Pie from Traverse City’s own Grand Traverse Pie Co., another recommendation from Batali that doesn’t disappoint. The only disappointment is knowing that I now have to point my Jetta south and head home, satisfied in the knowledge of a Pure Michigan vacation done right.
